The Irvine Dance Community is composed of 8 teams and various project teams situated at University of California, Irvine. Anyone who is/was a student at UCI or is/was part of a project or team situated at UCI is considered part of the Irvine Dance Community! Some of these teams have been around for decades, while others are more recently formed. Some of the teams compete at various dance competitions, while others are exhibition teams and perform mostly at UCI and community events. Many of the teams also host workshops for anyone interested in learning or training in urban dance. The various teams also perform annually as a community at events such as All UCI or Spring Quarter Dance Festival. Below is information regarding each of the different teams.
Kaba Modern is an urban collegiate dance group established in 1992 by Arnel Calvario. As a proud part of the Filipino-American club Kababayan, at the University of California, Irvine, he founded the group to perform in the modern dance suite of their annual PCN (Pilipino cultural night). The group has since evolved to be one of the most cutting edge Hip Hop dance crews in California. Kaba Modern’s legacy has lived on, first and foremost, as a family of artists, while embracing diverse styles of dance to create a name for themselves in the dance community.
Chinese Association Dance Crew, more popularly known as CADC, is an offshoot organization that stems from UCI's Chinese Association. Formed in 1994 by Lawrence Yang and Chris Wang and previously exclusive only to UC Chinese Club events, CADC (formerly known as CA Modern) has expanded their goals and gained a place within Southern California's hip hop dance scene with in the last several years. CADC is strictly a collegiate team, meaning that all dance members are official UCI students and CA club members. Although these two requirements have restricted many potential talented dancers from joining the team, CADC's past and present coordinators have done an outstanding job of recruiting teams with talent and most importantly, great chemistry.
B-Boys Anonymous is a freestyle-dance based club that welcomes all members of the UC Irvine community, regardless of experience or background in dance. Serving as an open environment for students to learn and grow as dancers, B-Boys Anonymous serves to spread the knowledge of Hip Hop culture and the art of freestyle to a greater audience by hosting open dance floors, workshops, and competitions, among other events.
Established 2003 by Alex Pantig as a branch of the school spirit pit crew, Modern Completely Insane Anteaters, more commonly known as MCIA, is an exhibition hip-hop dance team that gives its members opportunities to dance, grow, and have fun while upholding the values of respect, family, and its roots. Currently in the fifteenth year of its dance journey, MCIA has grown to become not just a hip-hop team, but a dance family. MCIA has been fortunate enough to have established ties within and outside the Irvine dance community. Over the years, the team has performed for events around Southern California, including at UCLA, Clippers' basketball games, and various nightclubs, while staying true to its roots and continuing to perform on the UCI campus and at UCI basketball games.
Established in 2004 by co-founders Brian "Big B" Amigable, Kirk Arradaza, Tommy Pham, and David "Q-boi" Quach, Common Ground is based at the University of California, Irvine. CG is comprised of both UCI and non-UCI students, bringing together a unique, diverse group of dancers from all over southern California. The team strives to show how much passion and love they have for dance and the hip-hop community. At the same time, they maintain a family environment by hanging out together, caring for each other, and sharing the desire to dance.
Level V Origins is an exhibition dance team that exists to provide the opportunity for those who have never had previous dance experience to explore hip hop dance. Our goal is to develop and hone leadership skills through our shared passion for dance while also expressing our Vietnamese-American identity.
INSA Dance is an exhibition hip-hop dance team based at UC Irvine. Founded in 2008, our mission is to continue to share our passion for dance with the public. As a family, we uphold our values and the name I Never Stand Alone.
Founded in 2010 by Ben Lee, Jessica Lee and Jeffrey Jin, originally Urban Motus was a constituent of the Konnect Club at UCI but since then has become its own organization that strives to demonstrate artistry through a variety of dance styles.
